About Jorak Veldt
Jorak Veldt writes prehistoric dark fantasy — fiction that drops readers into a world approximately one million years ago, before agriculture, before writing, before anything we would recognize as civilization. Rules of Survival and Blood Ember form a diptych about the transformation of instinct into culture: in the first book, a boy learns the rules of his band — water order, ember law, watch — and in the second, those rules begin to calcify into the structures we recognize as the first social laws. Veldt's writing is relentlessly physical: the body and its needs are the primary narrative reality, and thought is rare and costly. The result is fiction that makes you feel the evolutionary distance between the reader's world and the world's of the characters — and makes that distance feel like the point.
